Model-assisted DoE applied to microalgae processes

This study assesses the performance of model-assisted Design Experiment (mDoE) software toolbox for design two microalgae bioprocesses. The mDoE-toolbox was applied to maximize biomass growth Desmodesmus pseudocommunis in a photobioreactor by varying light intensity and pH Chlorella vulgaris shake flasks, duration. For both case studies, mathematical mechanistic model applied. In first only one experiment necessary adapt identify combination that improved yield, as confirmed experimentally. second study, no well-established available specific experimental arrangement. On basis literature, constructed cycle mDoE performed, thus identifying desired factor combinations. Experiments high yield but revealed shortcomings model. performed. recommended combinations from cycles were comparable. found be time-saving, cost-effective useful method enabling identification leading production different bioprocesses with low effort.
